Still on hiatus

But I didn’t want to let this pass you by

Decatur Arts Festival

J bought a lot of the artwork that is up in our house from this festival many moons ago.  I think the stuff tends to be better than the Dogwood Festival.  In any event, should be a good time and a good excuse to hang out in Decatur, where it’s greater and all.

In other news, I’m leaving Tuesday for this place.  Should be awesome and I cannot wait!  See y’all in two weeks!

Don’t cry for me, Argentina

But I’m on temporary leave. I know, I know, you’re heart is breaking (uh-huh, sure – will you even notice I’m gone?) J and I are soon to embark (1 week from today, exactly!) on an extended BVI vacation. It’s our delayed honeymoon and while I AM SO FREAKING EXCITED about it, this week will be hellish trying to get everything done at work I need to get done. Plus, an out of town wedding this weekend leaves not a lot of time for posting the fun stuff I find (actually, I haven’t even been finding fun stuff because I’m so freaking busy!)

Anyway, for the next foreseeable future (about three weeks, give or take a few days) I’ll be on hiatus. As consolation, here’s a recipe for nostalgic macaroni salad. Nothing like carbs and mayo to fill the void.

Wait, that’s not right

KICKS AND PUNCHES, Andi

That’s better.

NOSTALGIC “SOMETIMES I EAT MY FEELINGS” MACARONI SALAD

This is based on a salad I remember as a kid (hence, the nostalgia). It’s low brow and I love it – see, I’m not a food snob. Best thing, it’s totally adaptable (and scalable) to taste (and crowd size). This is just a starting point.

1/2 pound macaroni pasta (elbows or any tiny shapes will do in a pinch; my mom would use the short tubes)

1/2 cup mayo (soy/canola based is fine for vegans)

Dijon mustard, to taste (start at about 1 tablespoon)

Garlic powder, to taste (start 1 tsp)

Paprika, to taste

celery seed/salt, to taste

S&P

other desired seasonings (hot sauce, red pepper, etc.)

chopped pickles (I prefer dill but may sub sweet or even relish)

olives (can omit or sub capers)

*chopped red bell pepper

*can totally sub veggies of choice – try carrots, celery, radishes, tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, or anything else crunchy that holds up well in creamy dressings)

Directions:

Boil pasta as directed in salted water; drain reserving about 1/4 pasta water. While pasta is cooking make dressing, mixing mayo, mustard, seasonings. Toss pasta with veggies and dressing, adding reserved pasta water to achieve right consistency if dressing is too thick.  Chill for several hours and then enjoy the taste of childhood.

PS: you could probably try a olive oil vinegar based dressing if feeling healthy – let me know how it turns out.

LATER, Y’all!

Yippy Kai Yi Yay, beach going cowgirls

I would like to share with you all my newly purchased, soon to be delivered beach hat. I was trying to go for something that wasn’t too little old lady – I’m not sure if I succeeded but I think the hat will do it’s job – namely, keeping the sun off my hair (and preventing my new color from fading – sun and salt water are a bitch!) I wanted a straw hat but not a fedora or a floppy sun hat – this was what remained. Available at REI.

PS: Thanks to the wonderful J for getting said hat for me.

It’s ok, go ahead and geek-out, I won’t tell…

I get by with a little help from my friends

Truly, don’t we all?  Well, I need some help.  Suggestions, is more like it.  As I’ve mentioned a few times and will continue to mention ad nauseum until I actually go (and will be without regular internet access for TWO WHOLE WEEKS!!!  YES!!!!!!!!), I will be leaving at the end of the month for a two week odyssey in the BVI.

My plea to you – I need books – books to live!  Wait, no, that’s tungsten.  ANYWAY, please give me suggestions for good summer/beach reading – meaning no heavy historical biographies or anything like that.  Fun stuff that isn’t too fluffy nor too heavy – just right.  So, leave good book suggestions in the comments.  Doesn’t have to be recent, just anything enjoyable.  Much appreciated, y’all.

Sweeney Todd at the Fox, unfortunately with no Johnny Depp

Of course, it runs while I will be out of town on our belated honeymoon.  Regardless, should be fun.

The Dollar Makeup Store

I know that nowhere is the adage “you get what you paid for” more true than when it comes to makeup.  But sometimes it’s very easy to be seduced by a bargain.  Enter E.L.F.  (eyes lips faces – clever, no?)  Most products are a mere dollar.  Now, disclaimer: I have not yet actually tried any of their products.  And I’m guessing the sizes run to the smaller side for that price.  However, some of their products get fairly positive reviews on Makeup Alley.  I doubt I would try their foundations or concealers but I may go for some funky lip eye or blush colors I wouldn’t normally keep on hand for everyday wear but could justify for a dollar.  The fact that the line is carried by Big Lots does not install a bunch of confidence but I think it’s worth trying.  If anyone’s actually tried these let me know!  If I get around to ordering I’ll post an update.

A little bit of interwebs hilarity

To carry you through the Loooooooong Friday afternoon.  You won’t be sorry.

90s nostalgia + free music = pretty cool

Ah, Nine Inch Nails. I loved blasting the subversive “Closer” on my tiny three disc CD player. When no one was home, of course. I wasn’t that subversive. But just owning the album made me feel naughty. And, at that point in my life, I really liked angry music.

Well, Nine Inch Nails is coming out with a new album and is making it available…for free. No pay as you go type of Radiohead deal (which I never downloaded because I was afraid I would never cough up any money). Totally free. I haven’t had any time to give it a listen yet (I spent yesterday afternoon frying myself at the Braves game, drinking beers with my boss) but I will try to have a gander this weekend. Hopefully.

Here’s the site – enjoy! http://theslip.nin.com

Mom’s day is a coming

I get the double whammy – my mom’s b-day is always around Mother’s Day (May 13).  Luckily, Origins is offering 25% and free standard shipping in order to make my double gift burden a little easier (and, maybe a treat for myself).  The sale ends today, promo code is 0508FF.
